Down near the River Ure at West Tanfield, the Bruce Arms is an 18th-century coaching inn with wood fires and a well-regarded kitchen. There are rooms too, handy for exploring lower Wensleydale and the villages north of Ripon. Thirsk is the closest station but a fair drive east, so a car makes most sense here.
