Ancient cathedral with a Saxon crypt.
Ripon is a small cathedral city built over one of England’s oldest standing structures: the Anglo-Saxon crypt beneath the Minster, dating from around 672. The market square fills up on Thursdays, and every night at nine the hornblower still sounds the watch at the corners of the obelisk, a custom kept going for well over a thousand years. Thirsk is the nearest station, about 14km to the north-east.
