Newby Hall is a graceful house of around 1700 near Ripon, its rooms remodelled inside by Robert Adam in the 1760s. The real draw for gardeners is outside: broad twin herbaceous borders running the length of the grounds down to the River Ure, framing woodland walks and the national collection of dogwoods. Still a family home, owned by the Comptons, it opens to the public through the warmer months, with a miniature railway and adventure play thrown in for children. Knaresborough is the nearest station, about 10km south.
