Under the floor of Ripon Cathedral sits a cramped stone crypt built for St Wilfrid in the 670s — the oldest surviving fabric of any English cathedral, and you can go down the steps into it. The church above is later and far bigger, a collegiate minster that only became a cathedral in 1836 when Ripon got its own diocese. Services run daily, the doors are open through the day, and there’s no charge to go in. Fountains Abbey is a few miles south-west, and Ripon starts at the west door.
