Knaresborough is stacked on cliffs above a bend in the River Nidd, and the sight of the railway viaduct arching over the gorge with rowing boats below is one of Yorkshire’s best-known views. A ruined castle stands above the town, there are riverside gardens to stroll, and Mother Shipton’s Cave, with its petrifying well, sits across the water. The station is a short walk from the centre.
