Millstone grit crags drop straight into a still lake at Plumpton Rocks, a landscape garden laid out in the 1760s that caught the eye of J.M.W. Turner, who painted it in 1798. Paths thread between rock outcrops with names like Lion’s Den and Lover’s Leap, through rhododendrons and bluebell woods. It opens weekends and bank holidays from Easter to early October, plus the summer holidays, with a small admission charge. Knaresborough and its castle are a few kilometres north.
