Eighty-five acres of trees near Bedale, planted from 1931 by Sir Leonard Ropner and now rated among the finest arboreta in the country. It holds five national plant collections, including ash, walnut and laburnum, and dozens of record-breaking “champion” trees, with colour running from spring blossom to autumn fire. There’s also a birds of prey centre with daily flying displays, which makes it a good family day out as well as a plantsman’s one. Open to visitors most of the year; the tree trails are worth taking slowly.
