A single row of cottages lines the green at Castle Bolton, facing the great fortress that gives the village its name. Bolton Castle was finished in 1399 and later held Mary, Queen of Scots for several months in 1568; it’s still owned by the same family and open to visitors. Redmire and Carperby are the nearest villages, and it’s a peaceful, set-apart place above the valley floor.
