For four hundred years St Andrew’s was the only church with consecrated ground in upper Swaledale, which made it the mother church of an enormous parish. The dead were carried down the twelve-mile Corpse Way to be buried here, a grim trek that only eased once Muker got its own graveyard in 1580. The broad, low church at Grinton is Norman in origin with plenty added since, and keeps a Norman font and a Jacobean pulpit. Open daily; the Bridge Inn is right by it.
