St Andrew’s at Grinton is known as the Cathedral of the Dales — a big, low medieval church that was for centuries the only one in upper Swaledale, and the end point of the old ‘corpse way’ along which the dead were carried for burial from as far up the valley as Keld. The village sits either side of the river below it. Reeth is just across the Swale to the north-west.
