St Monans is one of the smallest and least-changed East Neuk villages, its zig-zag harbour packed tight below the houses. Its old kirk stands almost on the waterline at the west end — a 14th-century church so close to the sea that spray reaches it in a gale. A restored windmill above the shore recalls the salt-panning industry that once went on here. It’s a fine stretch of the Fife Coastal Path between here and Pittenweem.
