Pittenweem takes its name — roughly “place of the cave” — from St Fillan’s Cave, a small shrine tucked into the rock below the town where a 7th-century missionary is said to have lived and preached. It’s still used occasionally for worship. The cave is usually kept locked, but a key can be borrowed locally so you can let yourself in for a look.
