Settle is the lively market town of Ribblesdale, tucked beneath the wooded crag of Castleberg, with a Tuesday market held under a charter granted in 1249. It’s the southern start of the Settle–Carlisle railway, one of England’s great scenic lines, which climbs the dale past the Ribblehead Viaduct. Giggleswick is its quieter twin across the river, and it makes a fine base for the western Three Peaks.
