The Ribblehead Viaduct carries the Settle–Carlisle railway across Batty Moss on twenty-four stone arches, striding over open moor beneath Whernside. It was built through the 1870s and opened to traffic in 1875; the navvies who raised it lived in shanty camps on the moss, and many are buried at the little church down at Chapel-le-Dale. You can walk right up to it on a good path from the road, and trains still cross overhead. Ribblehead station sits just beside it, so you can arrive by rail, with the Station Inn on hand for a pint.
