Everyone in Edinburgh calls it Porty. Portobello is the city’s seaside suburb, three miles east of the centre, with a long Victorian promenade and a broad sweep of sand on the Firth of Forth. It fills up on the first warm day of the year: swimmers, dog-walkers, ice creams and a row of independent cafés along the front. Portobello Beach is the main event. Brunstane station is about 1.5km to the south-east.
