St Giles’ Cathedral, the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is the great church at the heart of the Royal Mile, marked out by its distinctive crown steeple. Inside, don’t miss the Thistle Chapel, a small, extraordinarily carved space built in the early 20th century for the Order of the Thistle. This was John Knox’s church and a centre of the Scottish Reformation. It’s open to visitors with a donation requested, and stands a few minutes’ walk up from Waverley station.
