Canongate Kirk stands on the lower Royal Mile, an unusual Dutch-gabled church built in 1691 to serve the Canongate parish. It’s the parish church of Holyrood and of Edinburgh Castle, and the Royal Family worship here when at Holyroodhouse. The kirkyard is worth a wander — Adam Smith and the poet Robert Fergusson are among those buried here. It’s open to visitors, free, and sits just up from the Palace. Waverley station is about half a kilometre away.
