Princes Street Gardens fill the valley below the Castle, on the ground where the old Nor Loch was once drained. The Mound splits them into east and west halves: the east side has the soaring Scott Monument, the west the ornate Ross Fountain and, on the slope by the pavement, the floral clock — planted out each summer and often called the world’s oldest. It’s the city’s green lung, free to wander, and a couple of minutes from Waverley station.
