Built in 1806 on the Royal Mile, Deacon Brodie’s Tavern is named after William Brodie — a respectable Edinburgh cabinetmaker and city councillor by day who turned out to be a burglar by night, and was eventually hanged for it. That double life is said to have helped inspire Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde. It’s a busy, central Old Town pub, handy for a break off the Mile, with food upstairs. Waverley station is a few minutes’ walk away.
