Portobello Beach is Edinburgh’s own seaside, a broad stretch of sand backed by a Victorian promenade three miles east of the centre. It’s where the city heads on a sunny day — swimmers, paddlers, sandcastles and a run of independent cafés, chip shops and bars along the prom. There are Turkish baths and a lido nearby too. Genuinely lovely, and easy to reach: Brunstane station is about 1.5km away, or hop on a bus from the city centre.
