The poet Michael Drayton spent his boyhood as a page at Polesworth Hall, and the Elizabethan house became a gathering point for writers remembered as the Polesworth Circle. The village grew up around an abbey founded in the 9th century on the River Anker, in the far north of the county; the church and its medieval gatehouse survive. Polesworth has its own station on the Trent Valley line.
