Penarth kept its Victorian and Edwardian seafront, a promenade of villas above a pebble beach on the Severn Estuary. The pier opened in 1895, and its Art Deco pavilion of 1929 now holds a cinema, gallery and café. Pleasure boats run from the pier in season, and the station is a short walk up the hill.
