By 1913 Barry was the largest coal-exporting port in the world, shipping out coal from the Rhondda pits through docks opened in 1889. The coal trade has long gone, and the draw now is Barry Island and the sweep of Whitmore Bay, with a funfair above the sands. Barry Docks station is a few minutes’ walk from the old waterfront.
