William Butterfield built this church high on Penarth Head in 1866, and it shows off everything he liked: grey limestone outside, a startling polychrome brick interior within. The saddleback tower was kept low and square at the Admiralty’s request, so ships in the Severn Estuary could steer by it. Open to visitors, and a five-minute walk from Penarth Pier. Penarth station is under a kilometre away.
