Tucked in a wooded valley, Llancarfan grew around one of Wales’s early monasteries. Its church of St Cadoc holds medieval wall paintings uncovered in 2008 beneath layers of limewash, among them one of the most complete depictions of St George and the dragon in any British church. The village keeps a pub and little through traffic. Rhoose is the nearest station, about 4km south.
