Nantwich is a medieval salt town on the River Weaver, and one of Cheshire’s finest for old buildings — a dense knot of black-and-white timber-framed houses, many rebuilt after a great fire in 1583, to which Elizabeth I herself contributed. At its centre stands St Mary’s, a big red-sandstone church sometimes called the cathedral of south Cheshire. The station is a short walk from the middle of town.
