Great Salkeld is an Eden-valley village of old cottages round a green, its church of St Cuthbert known for the fortified pele tower built onto it as a refuge from Scottish raids. The Highland Drove is a well-regarded dining pub. Lazonby & Kirkoswald station, on the Settle–Carlisle line, is a couple of miles north, near neighbouring Lazonby.
