Tacked onto St Cuthbert’s at Great Salkeld is a fortified pele tower, added around 1380 when border raids were a real danger. Its ground room is stone-vaulted, and an iron-barred door called a yett still guards the way in — a cracking bit of border history in a quiet Eden village. Great Salkeld sits just south of the church.
