Penrith Beacon is a squat stone tower on the wooded hill above the town, built in 1719 on the spot where beacons were once lit to warn of raids coming over the border. A short but steep path climbs up through the trees from the edge of Penrith, and from the top there are wide views over the Eden valley to the fells. Good for an hour’s walk if you’re passing through.
