Come in early summer and Dalemain’s gardens are full of blue Himalayan poppies; there are old roses too, and a huge silver fir said to have the largest girth in the country. The house near Ullswater grew from a medieval pele tower into a Georgian mansion, and every March it hosts the World’s Original Marmalade Awards. The stone bears at Dacre church are close by.
