Four weathered stone bears stand at the corners of the churchyard at St Andrew’s, Dacre — carved from red sandstone, about four feet high, and nobody really knows how old they are or what they were for. The church sits in quiet country near Ullswater, worth the short detour to puzzle over them. Dalemain’s gardens are just up the road.
