Lowther Castle is a vast shell — roofless since the 1950s — with 130 acres of gardens brought back to life around and inside the ruin, including a bold contemporary garden by Dan Pearson set within the old walls. Children make straight for the Lost Castle, a huge timber adventure playground. It’s near Askham, a few miles south of Penrith.
