Askham is an estate village of neat greens above the River Lowther, long tied to the Lowther family whose ruined Lowther Castle and its gardens sit just across the valley. There are a couple of good inns, including the Queen’s Head, and field paths drop down to the river. Penrith and its station are about six miles north.
