If you like a church you have to earn, Ninekirks rewards the walk. St Ninian’s sits alone in a loop of the River Eden near Penrith, reached on foot across the fields, and was rebuilt by Lady Anne Clifford in 1660 — one of very few churches raised in Cromwell’s day. The plain 17th-century interior has barely been touched since.
