Lacy’s Caves are five linked chambers cut by hand into the red sandstone cliffs above the River Eden near Little Salkeld — a folly carved out in the 18th century by a local landowner, Colonel Lacy, reputedly for entertaining guests. You reach them on foot along a riverside path from the village; it’s free to visit, but the ground near the cliff edge is unfenced and can be slippery, so watch children and mind your footing.
