Sir Thomas Parkyns, the eccentric squire of Bunny in the early 1700s, was a keen wrestler who ran an annual championship on the green and left a memorial in the church showing himself braced in a wrestling stance. He built the village its free school and almshouses, and the Grade I church and the old grammar school still line the street below Bunny Hill.
