The last real fighting of the Civil War in Nottinghamshire happened just outside Willoughby, in a field north-west of the church, on 5 July 1648, when a Parliamentarian force caught and beat a column of Royalists riding south. One of the dead, the young Michael Stanhope, is remembered by a brass inside the church, which also holds a fine run of Willoughby family tombs. The village sits on the ridge of the old Fosse Way, with Bunny Old Wood nearby.
