Fans of All Creatures Great and Small will know Askrigg: this Wensleydale village stood in for fictional Darrowby in the 1978–90 BBC series, with one of its houses as the exterior of Skeldale House and the Kings Arms as the Drovers’ Arms. Beyond the TV connection it’s a dignified place of tall stone houses around a cobbled market cross. Bainbridge and Hawes are near neighbours up the dale.
