Gunnerside sits where Gunnerside Gill meets the Swale, its cottages packed tight below the fell. The gill above the village was one of the great lead-mining valleys of the Dales, and a walk up it passes ruined smelt mills and the scars of ‘hushes’, where miners dammed and released water to strip the hillside down to the ore. The Kings Head anchors the village. Muker lies up the dale, Low Row down it.
