The pioneering wildlife photographers Richard and Cherry Kearton were born at Thwaite, a small cluster of cottages in upper Swaledale — a carved panel of birds and animals on one of the houses remembers them. The Pennine Way passes through on its way round Kisdon Hill, and it’s an easy walk to Muker across the meadows or up to Keld. Tiny, sheltered and quiet.
