Buttertubs Pass is the high moorland road linking Wensleydale and Swaledale, one of the great Dales drives. It’s named for the deep limestone potholes beside the summit — the “buttertubs”, where farmers heading to market are said to have lowered their butter to keep it cool. The 2014 Tour de France came over the top, which sealed its reputation with cyclists. It’s a narrow road with passing places and sheep on the tarmac, so take it steadily. Garsdale station is about 9km south-west.
