Bainbridge is arranged around one of the biggest village greens in the Dales, complete with a set of old stocks. The little River Bain runs through it — at under three miles, from Semerwater down to the Ure, one of the shortest named rivers in England. A Roman fort once stood on the low hill above the village. Askrigg sits just across the valley, and Hawes is a few miles up Wensleydale.
