Just a short stroll from Hawes, Gayle is the older of the two — a cluster of cottages around Gayle Beck, which steps down over limestone ledges through the middle of the village. The restored eighteenth-century mill by the water still has its machinery and opens to visitors at times. It’s a quieter place to stay than busy Hawes next door.
