At the foot of Winnats Pass near Castleton, Speedwell Cavern is reached by an unusual underground boat trip. A guide punts you along a flooded 18th-century lead-mining tunnel to a vast chamber called the Bottomless Pit, where the miners once tipped their spoil into the water. Paid tours run through the day, and Edale station is about 3km away over the tops.
