One of the show caves in the hills above Castleton, Blue John Cavern is worked for Blue John, the banded purple-and-yellow fluorspar found nowhere in Britain but here and neighbouring Treak Cliff. Tours follow the old miners’ route down through a chain of natural chambers, and the stone is still dug in small amounts out of season and made up locally into jewellery. It’s a paid visit, on the flank of Mam Tor.
