The 'shivering mountain' with its ridge walk over the Peak.
At 517m, Mam Tor rises between Castleton and Edale with an Iron Age hillfort ringing its summit — the ramparts still clear underfoot. It’s known as the Shivering Mountain for the shale landslips that keep slumping off its eastern face; one of them carried away the old main road, whose buckled tarmac still lies below. A paved path climbs it, and the ridge walk east towards Lose Hill is a Peak District classic. Edale station is under 2km to the north.
