Salt made Cheshire, and the Lion Salt Works at Marston is the last open-pan salt works of its kind left in the country. After production stopped in 1986 the site was rescued and reopened in 2015 as an excellent museum, where you can walk through the old brine pans and drying sheds and get a real sense of the graft involved. There’s a café and play area too. Northwich station is about 1.5km south.
