Victorian 'cathedral of canals' boat lift.
Opened in 1875, the Anderton Boat Lift is a huge iron contraption that raises narrowboats fifty feet between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal above it. Nicknamed the Cathedral of the Canals, it’s a genuinely impressive piece of Victorian engineering. There’s a visitor centre with a café and exhibition, and you can walk the towpath and watch the mechanism up close. Note the lift has been closed to boat traffic since early 2025 while a fault is repaired, so check ahead if you’re hoping for a trip. Greenbank station is about 2.5km south.
