A steep escarpment top above Llyn y Fan Fach, on the wild western edge of the Brecon Beacons

Picws Du is the high point of Bannau Sir Gaer, the “peaks of Carmarthenshire” — a curving wall of old red sandstone escarpment on the far western side of Bannau Brycheiniog, the Brecon Beacons. At 749m it stands above a steep north-facing drop, with the small lake of Llyn y Fan Fach cupped in the hollow below and the rim running on east to Fan Brycheiniog, the highest point of the range. This is the quiet, remote end of the Beacons, a world away from the crowds on Pen y Fan, and the walk up from the lake is a steady pull onto the escarpment. Both the Beacons Way and the Cambrian Way follow the ridge.
