You have to walk in to reach Llyn y Fan Fach, a small dark glacial lake — llyn is Welsh for lake — under the steep north face of the Carmarthen Fans in the west of Bannau Brycheiniog, the Brecon Beacons. The usual approach follows a track up from the car park near Llanddeusant, with the ridge of Bannau Sir Gaer rising beyond the water. The lake is bound up with one of the best-known Welsh folk tales, the Lady of the Lake. In the story a farmer married a woman who rose from the water on condition he never strike her three times, and when he finally did she went back into the lake for good. Their sons, so the tale goes, became the Physicians of Myddfai, a famous line of healers. The bigger Llyn y Fan Fawr lies a short way east under Fan Brycheiniog.
